New York ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1788 as the 11th State.
New York adopted its flag in 1901. The coat of arms shows a scene along the Hudson River, framed by goddesses of liberty and justice. The American eagle surmounts the world at the top; the motto "Excelsior" appears below.
